As many hip parents know, baby slings have become an increasingly popular mode of transporting your infant or toddler around – from A-list celebrities spotted wearing a designer Baby Bjorn with baby in tow, to everyday moms and dads on the go who choose to use a variety of baby slings and carriers, the baby carrier is the way to carry your little one in style!

Saving Green…

With today’s ever-tightening economy, some parents are choosing to get crafty – and get sewing! While there are many gifted homemakers who enjoy making their own baby clothes, others are merely looking to save a penny or two and design their own easy-to-sew or no-sew baby wrap.

Going Green…

There are also environmentally-conscious parents who would prefer to start their child’s life on a green note – and organic baby slings are easily made, using natural fibers and textiles (such as hemp and unbleached cotton) as eco-friendly alternatives to synthetic materials used in traditional baby carriers.

Making a Scene!

Still others choose to express their creative side – crocheting, knitting and hand-stitching hip baby slings to suit their own personal style, crafty folks everywhere can consult a multitude of craft magazines and websites for how-to’s and blogs when creating their own original baby sling designs.

Ready, Set…Sew!

So, whether you’re on a budget, looking to express your artistic or creative side, or simply trying to live a greener lifestyle, it’s easy to make your own cheap baby slings – below, DIY instructions to sew your own baby wrap!

HOW TO MAKE BABY SLINGS:

For anyone who has basic sewing skills, this is a fairly simple project:

1. First, choose your fabric at a local fabric store – since you will be sewing (or serging) the edges, you may choose woven cloth that is unfinished, as well as fleeces and cotton knits, as long as they don’t curl up when cut.

2. Next, cut your cloth to the proper dimension – if you’re purchasing your fabric in person, the salesperson can cut the cloth to your specifications; we recommend 20 to 35” wide and at least 5 yards (15 feet) long.

3. Finally, you will finish the edges by serging all four sides of the material.

If you do not have your own serger, we recommend hemming all the way around the four sides of the baby wrap. You may also choose to visit your local sewing machine store, which might let you borrow their serger for free or for a small fee; visiting a tailor or dry cleaners is another affordable option for finishing your baby wrap.

IMPORTANT TIP: DO NOT buy 2.5 yards of 2 different materials & sew them together to create 5 yards - this will result in a WEIGHT-BEARING seam, weakening your baby wrap & making it less safe!

Although this is a moderately easy sling project for some, sewing isn’t quite an option for everyone, especially when you consider what you’re transporting! For the rest of us less-than-crafty folks who want to carry their precious cargo stylishly (and safely!), it’s not difficult to find inexpensive and cheap baby slings. There are many online sources, including Babysling.com, where you can find a great assortment of affordable baby slings & infant slings, including the ERGO baby carrier, Hotslings brand, Moby Wrap, Maya, Ellaroo, Baby K’Tan baby carrier and more! Whether you’re looking for a baby backpack, a linen baby sling, a Velcro sling, organic slings or any other type of kid sling, you’re sure to find a wonderful selection of moderately-priced, eco-friendly and stylish options at Babysling.com!

By: Philip Morrison

Retractable awnings are a treat for the eye: sleek, modern, stylish. Buying on a budget has its own set of limitations – especially trying to find something with style. Retractable awning frames are all simple and similar, seemingly making it hard to find one that fits your specific house or building with a “one size fits all” look. However, even on a budget, there are many ways that a retractable awning can be individualized.

About Budget Awnings

Basically, budget awning lines keep prices down by offering fewer frame styles, usually only one basic style, having a smaller fabric selection, providing standard sizes instead of custom-measured sizes, and having lower-quality construction, usually using frames from China (with cheaper labor) than Europe (known for innovation and engineering).

However, despite minor limitations, budget retractable awnings have a clean-lined and modern style that can work with almost any architectural style or era. And budget awnings do not have to be low quality if the construction basics are covered:

•	A lightweight aluminum frame, which is corrosion-proof and easy to install.

•	First-grade plastic end caps which, unlike regrind materials, isn’t brittle or prone to break.

•	Electrostatic powder coating, which doesn’t crack or peel.

•	Stainless steel mounting hardware, which won’t rust or bleed.

Buying a good awning is only the first step, though. The goal is to find a good awning that is both eye-catching and harmonizes with a home, something both functional and personal.

How to Make an Individual Impression

There are a surprising number of components to an awning: the actual frame, the awning fabric, the valance, the color of the piping (or trim) along the seams of the fabric, and other accessories, like sensors and motors.

Even though there is usually only a single frame option on a budget series, the other parts of the awning can have significant selections. Any good retractable awning company can have well over 100 fabric options, and they will provide fabric samples (if requested). The biggest single visible option for an awning is the fabric, and almost every color is available, and available in both solids and stripes. For fabric, look for four things:

•	Good selection. Color and, if it fits the style, pattern are key to making an awning a part of both the house and the general landscape. (The manufacturer should charge the same price for a striped fabric as a solid fabric.)

•	Solution-dyed acrylic fabric, which imbrues the dye color into the fabric before it’s woven, so the color is long-lasting and fade-resistant.

•	Pneumatic machine sewing. Pneumatic machines sew from the center of the awning fabric out to the edges. This method is much straighter than traditional sewing machines because it can sew the entire length of fabric at once. This is excellent for patterns because it ensures stripes are even on both ends of the awning.

•	Tenara® thread, instead of cotton or polyester. Tenara® thread is UV-resistant and tested in the Arizona desert; it doesn’t fray or break and is guaranteed for the lifetime of the awning.

The second most visible part of the awning is the valance, the strip of fabric that hangs at the end of the awning. There are a half dozen valance styles, such as straight, scalloped, or squared, which can change the character of the awning look. Straight and angular styles are more modern or work with more minimalist designs while scallops and waves work with gingerbread and flourished styles.

Also, buyers can select their trim colors, usually from a selection of around 20 trim colors. Some manufacturers don’t offer any choice on trim colors and preselect valance trims for each fabric, so that fabric A always has trim color B. A better budget awning company lets you select the trim and fabric independently, and that opens up possibilities for interesting custom combinations.

From a functional perspective, accessories like motors and on/off switches make it easier to use the awning. Especially practical are wind sensors with a time delay. This kind of sensor rechecks the wind speed on a schedule (roughly every ten minutes) and will reopen the retractable awning automatically when the wind slows to an acceptable speed.

And the last consideration is where the awning can go. Over 90% of retractable awnings are used over patios and decks, but there are many other places to put an awning, which can create a completely unique, integrated appearance:

•	Over windows and doors

•	At side buildings for recessed entertaining areas

•	Covering narrow walkways

•	Over balconies and fire escapes

•	In a series of small awnings spaced over a large area for “patchy,” controlled shade

The bones of a budget retractable awning frame may all look the same, but everything that builds on top if it, from the fabric to the way you use it, can be custom-suited to any home, building, RV, or trailer with a little creativity.

By: Eric Scop

If you need a gift for a special person, or just need some time to unwind, make a creative handicraft. Crafting is therapeutic when you are feeling stressed, and it also can yield a useful or decorative item. Everyone has some measure of creativity, and with modern kits and patterns, a creative handicraft does not have to end in frustration.

If you have a sewing machine, you can learn to make a creative handicraft that will be a useful and welcome gift. Potholders are a great beginning sewing project that can be made from scrap material or unwanted clothing and a bit of double-fold bias tape. Here are the simple instructions for this creative handicraft.

First cut two 8-inch (21 cm.) squares of fabric to be the front and back of the potholder. Choose coordinating fabrics that match your kitchen for these pieces. To make it easier, you can make an 8-inch square pattern from a piece of cardboard to use as a pattern. Cut more 8-inch squares of any old fabric to stack for the filling. You want the stack of fabric squares to be thick enough to protect you from a hot pot, but thin enough to be flexible and able to be sewn through.

Stack all layers so that the outer layers are facing to the outside and the filler layers are inside. You can put a couple of large straight pins through all layers to keep them together. Now sew right across the middle of the stack. Sew across the middle again, perpendicular to the first stitching. You will have divided the square into 4 squares. Sew across the stack again from corner to corner, and again from the other corner to corner. The layers should be joined and sturdy now.

To bind off the raw edges of your creative handicraft, trim with scissors so that all the layers are again even at the edges. Open out one folded edge of the bias tape. The wider bias tape might seem to be easier to use, but the narrow type makes a neater finished product. Starting at one corner, line up the edges of the tape with the edges of the potholder, and start stitching through all layers along the first fold line, which will be about 1/4 inch from the edge. Stitch neatly and slowly, attaching the opened tape all around the edge until you reach the beginning corner. Cut the bias tape off, leaving 3 inches, (7 cm.) to make into a hanging loop.

Fold the bias tape over the raw edge so that the middle fold lines up with the outside of the potholder and the other fold is hiding the raw edge of the bias tape. Now, for best results, hand sew the binding down, forming a loop on your creative handicraft when you get to the end.

This potholder is just one example of a creative handicraft you can create if you have a sewing machine. When it is finished, you will have a useful item made from all recycled materials. Feel free to give this creative handicraft away or keep it for yourself.

By: Nicholas Tan

Have you thought about all the new designs that are on the shelves and just who is the one that puts them there? Most human beings are curious about these things because of human nature. People have the frame of mind for searching endlessly which is very tiring when it used for styles of a contemporary fashion. Thinking back to the past, you will note that a free hand design in embroidery was a large form of expression. This free hand form goes back to the time of 3000 BC.

There are several ways that are used for creating free hand patterns for embroidery like the use of three dimensional threads. By using this thread, there was more character that was given to home furnishings like linen, blankets, drapes, curtains, and others. Today's Western culture boasts that needlework is done only by the women. The Victorian age of English ladies and their embroidery crafts were all the proof that was needed to support this theory.

In the middle of the nineteenth century, the sewing machine was given to the world. The sewing machine went against the hand sewn designs since this was a much faster way to create the items. This equipment was not much better than free handed designs in embroidery. The sewing machine had a great impact on the ones that were operating them but, it also impacted that century's economy.

Because of the problems with the sewing machine, a new surge of patterns for embroidery came out in full force. Some separate countries came up with their own types of designs like Danes, Hard ranger, and Hededo. Italy was not far behind when they created their own type called Reticella that was shown in all the soft details of the cutting. Some other countries in the Slavic Regions created clothing for the large parties that were adorned with the greatest items.

In Europe in the Western part, embroidery patterns that were done by free hand were commonly shown to have wool in them. Crewel is one of the types that uses had two layers of the wool. This type of craft was already coming up to hundreds of years old. This type of embroidery was used for bed coverings and also chairs. It was also called Jacobean. This was a romantic form of the craft because each peace had a passion about it that was very obvious to the eye.

The Egyptians used shades of white in their crafting on a regular basis. Germany created Dresden that utilized lace that was sewn to a fabric that had minute outlines on it. Scotland also had a form of sewing that was called Ayrshire that was born in France. Anyone that was skilled in these would be unanimous in there decision that Ayrshire has to be the better of all the other forms.

If you want to learn hand embroidery, you can choose any of the methods we have listed. These are all easy to adopt and will certainly give you hours of creative fun.

By: David Faulkner

Embroidery machines are either manual or computerized sewing machines that can create numerous complicated patterns and designs used for making different styles of embroidery projects.

Most embroidery sewing machines used by crafters, quilters, and seamstresses today are driven by computers because of their precision and convenience.

Although there are still some who use the manual type of embroidery machine nowadays, these units are used mainly for fiber art and quilting projects only.

Many crafters and fabric artists also still use the manual type for embellishing garments, but as computer-driven embroidery and sewing machines are now becoming more affordable, most of them have switched to the computerized free machine embroidery process to create embellishments on items or to create textile art.

There are a number of factors that you need to consider before you actually purchase your own sewing machine. First of all, you have to take a look at your own needs.

If you're basically starting out, a sewing machines review may tell you that you stick to sewing machines with lesser number of stitching functions or electrical devices. Otherwise, you go for the computerized ones, with very helpful and easy-to-navigate menus, such as those of Singer as well as Janome.

You will also be able to identify other details concerning about your sewing machines equipment. Does it have a presser foot or a drop-feed dog mechanism?

Definitely, you will need them if you're dealing with heavier or thicker fabrics. They will give you more control over their movement in the sewing machine.

Most of all, sewing machines reviews can give you a good inkling about its monetary value. A cheap Singer sewing machine doesn't mean you're shortchanged of quality in the same way that an expensive one doesn't really connote superiority in its standards.

By: globalsewingmachine

When writing a sales letter, it’s important to place special focus on creating an impressive and attention-grabbing start with your opening sentence or paragraph. If you don’t start it correctly, it’s highly unlikely that your readers will get past the first paragraph before deleting your email…and categorizing it as SPAM. If you are selling security systems, you can open your sales letter by referring to the Virginia Tech massacre and pointing out the seemingly inadequate security system of the university. Statistics always exercise great influence on a person’s opinion because they can reflect the majority of the public’s opinion and they’re a product of careful study and research. By using statistics as an opening in your sales letter, you’re able to immediately establish credibility for your company. It not only gives them a reason to read more of your sales letter but it also convinces them to believe in you as well.

The statistics you’ll use in your sales letter must be easily understandable and can immediately convey your message. Be sure to provide proper credits so your readers can confirm their validity and reliability right away. Think of the number one problem that your target market is suffering from and something that your products or services could immediately solve. Summarize it in one to two sentences and your readers are sure to be hooked. Say you’re selling portable sewing machines. If your target market is those who sew for recreational purposes, you can start by addressing the problem of space. Sewing machines generally require you to use a certain amount of space for them, but that’s not going to be a problem with portable sewing machines. With such an item, your reader will be able to sew right in the comfort of their bedroom without having to rearrange the furniture. Another great way of opening your sales letter is by asking a question. Asking a question allows you to directly and immediately address your reader and catch his attention. Your question could be something like “Is getting your numbers straight the hardest part of managing your home based business?” Math is something many people find notoriously hard but your office software could solve that particular problem. Items that are considered necessities would benefit with a problem-and-solution type of opening but for items considered as frivolities or those that merely satisfy wants rather than needs, they might have no problems to solve or visit www.the-gurus-apprentice.com what they do have however are benefits, and that’s what you can use when opening your sales letter. If you are selling gourmet pet food, you could start your sales letter by stating how your food products could forge a stronger bond between you and your pet. Gourmet pet food may not be a necessity, but it can make your pet feel good and appreciated in no way that ordinary pet food could achieve. Lastly, you can use the power of imagery to effectively start your sales letter. This works especially well when aesthetics is a major factor of your product. Examples of such products and services are travel packages, jewelries, and clothes. While you don’t need to write an elaborate and overly long description, the words you do use should all create a stunning image that will reinforce the need to buy what you’re selling.

By: VIBHA GOVIL

Jacob Schiess started the first commercial embroidery manufacturing establishment in 1848 in New York. He came from Switzerland and within a year had his own embroidery plant in operation. All the stitching was done by hand by fifteen woman stitching exquisite designs by hand.

The development of machine embroidery did not take place until the 1800's. Joshua Heilmann from Mulhouse worked on the design of a hand embroidery machine. Though he did not sell many, it revolutionized the embroidery industry. Heilmann's invention was quickly followed by the "shuttle embroidery" and the "chain stitch embroidery" methods.

The beginnings of shuttle embroidery dates back to the 1860's when Isaak Groebli, from St. Gallen, Switzerland, was inspired by the work produced on the sewing machine.

Around the 1870's there were fourteen companies manufacturing embroidery machines in Switzerland manufacturing hand loom embroidery machines. Today there are four companies manufacturing schiffli embroidery machines.

In 1873, Alphonse Kursheedt imported twelve of the ten new embroidery hand looms from St. Gallen, making him the first American to use a mechanized embroidery process. The looms used multiple needles and were an unbelievable improvement over the age-old process of stitching by hand. They were, however, powered manually.

Immediately afterwards, Isaak Groebli of Switzerland invented the first practical Schiffli Embroidery machine. This machine was based on the principals introduced by the newly invented sewing machine. Groebli's machine utilized the combination of a continuously threaded needle and shuttle containing a bobbin of thread. The shuttle itself looked similar to the hull of a sailboat. "Schiffli" means "little boat" in the Swiss dialect of the German language, so his machine came to be known as a schiffli machine.

In 1876, Kursheedt began importing a number of schiffli machines to America, thereby making him the real founder of the schiffli embroidery industry in the United States.

Dr. Robert Reiner, founder of Robert Reiner, Inc., of Weehawken, came to the United States in 1903 in his early twenties. Realizing the potential of the embroidery industry, he persuaded the Vogtlandishe Machine Works of Plauen, Germany, to appoint him it's American agent. This began a mass importation of embroidery machines into northern New Jersey's Hudson County. The banks arranged long-term credit to purchasers. Dr. Reiner made it possible for hundreds of Austrian, German, and Swiss immigrants in New Jersey to become manufacturers of embroidery.

The industry grew until 1938, when suddenly the two sources for the manufacture of machines in Plauen, Germany, and Arbon, Switzerland, ceased operation because of World War 2. No additional machines were produced until 1953, when Robert Reiner Inc. introduced the first American-made schiffli machine. Gradually in time, improvements were made to the machine in America as well as in Switzerland and Germany.

Today computers are playing a major role in the embroidery process.

----------------

StitchBank.com - Your #1 source of Machine Embroidery Designs

Wilcome to embroidery web shop!

By: Artur Cosicov

It's not unusual to have a collection of antique quilts. But doll quilts?

Yes, doll quilts. While charming in their own right, they are difficult to find because during the period they were made, they were considered unimportant and insignificant.

Many were made from leftovers and got hard use from the little girls who owned them. Quilts made by young girls are likely to reflect their lack of refined skills in hand stitching.

Girls in the early nineteenth century were trained from the time they were very young in what was thought to be their life's work. Before sewing machines were common in homes, hand sewing was important for girls to learn since they would likely be stitching all of the clothing, linens and bedding for her home.

It seemed natural, then, that doll quilts would be the perfect practice piece. Not only were they small, but a girl could start with something simple, like strips, and then work up to making a nine patch, and even sewing curves.

Beyond that, if she chose, a young girl could piece a more complex design, using triangles as well as squares in her doll quilt.

Both girls and boys were taught to sew by their mothers, often before they learned how to read. A very small child might begin sewing using an unknotted thread, and then gain even more practice by counting threads on a scrap of fabric.

It was not uncommon for girls to be expected to complete a nine-patch by the time she was nine years old. Amazingly, some mid-nineteenth century diaries record quilt tops being finished by girls as young as five.

One quilter, Edith Bell Sims, says she began a quilt at age three, with her mother cutting the fabric, marked the sewing lines, and pinning the pieces together. Edith then stitched the patches - initially by hand and later on her new treadle sewing machine. Edith finished her quilt top by the time she was six.

Sewing was (and probably still should be) believed to inspire virtues deemed necessary for every child: neatness, attentiveness, patience, perseverance, and acceptance of routine and repetition.

Girls in upper class families also learned to do needlework, although they used finer materials and more intricate designs. It's not unusual to find crazy quilts using velvets, wools and silks that were made by children in upper class families.

Unlike children today, children in the 1800s had little other than their imagination to play with. Only the upper class could afford to purchase dolls imported from Europe, so children created dolls from sticks, hankies, corncobs, or whatever else they could find.

It wasn't surprising that girls would want to create something just like they had for their dolls. Often, the girls would take pieces left from worn out quilts and make them into quilts for their dolls.

Sometimes, they would replicate a bed size quilt using smaller pieces, to be sure to re-create the pattern of the bed size quilt top. Other times, they would use patches left over from bed size quilts to make their doll quilts, even though the quilt top design would be lost.

Most of these quilts are pieced, not appliqu?and some have been made from children's handkerchiefs printed with holiday or religious themes.

Due to labor saving devices, and smaller families, twentieth century mothers had more time to include creative components in their doll quilts - nursery rhymes, animals, and even pastel colors.

Quilts today are made in all different sizes, each for a different purpose. Some large quilts have never seen the top of a bed, even though they are the size of a king size bed quilt.

Likewise, some small quilts were made to fill a spot on a wall, and were never intended even for a doll bed. I wonder if maybe some of those tiny quilts from the nineteenth century hung on a wall, and were never placed on a doll bed.

By: Penny Halgren

There are four major areas that you must collect information about before creating a marketing plan: business resume, target market, product message, and "how-to" get the message to probable customers (advertising).

Although it is nice for us all to see these sexual images as a fantasy that the marketer is creating to sell its product but it can actually cause problems. Getting your name out there or creating brand consciousness is a welcome by-product, but it shouldn't be the main focus of your marketing efforts.

Depending on marketing and distribution objectives, some products may require up to 12 languages, creating complicated multilingual product labeling and IFU challenges. So, after a great deal of time and energy is spent going over the various attributes of the product or service and creating a proposal designed to impress the prospect, now the objections start flowing and the salesperson has to overcome them one by one, almost in an confrontational situation which is not the most forward-moving manner. After all, what's the use of spending all your time and money on creating a unique product that many people want, building a 100-page site, for more details visit to www.product-launching.com winning top rankings on search engines, and spending $5,000 in advertising; if visitors don't stay once they arrive? Once you have your own product, you create a name for yourself as an expert enhancing your credibility and chance of creating valuable joint ventures alliances with other professionals; you make more money especially when doing a product launch to announce your new product.
